2. 3(-1- 8i) + 2(4 + 3i)
3. (4 - 8i) + (-13 + 23 i)
4. (6 + 17 i) - (18 - 9i)
5. 2(1 - 3i) - 3(7 + i)
6. (-30 + i) - (-2 + 20 i)

1.(2+5i)+(-2+5i)

=2+5i-2+5i

=0+10i

2.3(-1-8i)+2(4+3i)

=-3-24i+8+6i

=5-18i

The mathematics book is proper. The critical thing to "remember" (know) is that a complex number

is made up of a real component and an imaginary(non-real)

component. [When you're dealing only with real numbers (in the complex,

number universe) the imaginary (non-real) component is virtually ignored.]



That said, the real numbers and non-reals are DISJOINT SETS; they share

no common element(s). 1) 10i

4) -12 +26i. Now you can do the rest.

they all easy .. you just add or subtract the corresponding real numbers and the imaginary parts



eg (a+bi) + (c+ di ) = (a+c) + (b+d) i

just add your real parts, then add your imaginary parts



I bet if you replaced all the "i"s with x you could do it! It is no more complicated than that.
