I will explain how to understand them, and YOU write the paragraph!

Make yourself a number line with increments. On the right hand side of the number line, place your zero. Then start placing negative numbers to the left of the zero starting with -1.

-10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 ....... 0

When we add negative numbers, we are moving to the left on the number line. For example, add -1 and -4. We do this by seeing that if we start at -1 on the number line, we are now going to move even further away from zero because -4 is not a positive number. Move 4 spaces to the left and you are at -5.

Doesn't matter how big (small really!) your negative numbers are, the principal is the same.

Just to make sure you understand, what would you get if you added +4 to the -1? Notice how you will be moving toward the positive side of the number line when adding a positive number.

Hope that helps. If not, check out http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mepres/book7/bk7i15/bk7_15i1.htm

Hi! :)

Adding negative numbers is really easy. I will give you a few examples on how to do it. So if you are supposed to add -9 and -2 together, it will be -11. Think of it as adding 9 and 2 which equals 11, and just adding a negative sign in front of it. Heres another example: If you were supposed to add -5 and 2, it would equal -3. Try using those neg/pos number tile things if you are still confused. Theres really nothing that confusing about neg numbers. Just try a bit harder. I am sure you'll get it.

Hope I helped! :)

adding negative numbers is like adding positive numbers but in the other direction.

Say that you have a number line:

-8_-7_-6_-5_-4_-3_-2_-1_0_1_2_3 (this is supposed to be a number line atleast)

Now, adding positive numbers is like going forward on this line. But adding negative numbers is like moving backwards. Say you have (-3) + (-5). You start at -3 and then you "subtract" 5. Therefore from -3 you have to move -5 spots to end up with -8.

Now if you have a positive number and you are adding a negative number, just treat the negative number like a subtraction. So (-4) + 5 is the same as 5 +(-4) which is the same as 5-4 = 1.

Hope that helped

When adding negative numbers, you're always going to be moving more the the negative side. Take this for example:

- 40 + -30 = -70

It's not -10, because you're moving more towards the negative side. If you know the sign rules where:

(+) (+) = +

( -) ( -) = +

(- ) (+) = -

So really, this question would look like: -40 - 30 = -70.

A well good explanation can be seen here, exactly what I would have said, but saves me some time:

Just did a little googling and found it for you. good luck !

When adding negative numbers you just do the opposite. -1 + -1 = -2 It helps if you use a number line.

When it is like 6 + -2 get rid of the + so that you only have 6-2= 4

just like adding positive numbers but there negative and when your adding negative and positive like

9- -9 you change both of the - signs to + signs making the subtracting sign a addition sign and the negative sign a positive sign

when you see a negative number, you subtract it. so if its:

4+ -5 = -1

but if its:

-3 + -4=

you just ignore the - signs for a wee bit. then you add them normally then just add the -.

when you add negative numbers, you subtract.
