The question is There are 112 male and 78 females working at a hospital. What percentage of the hospitals workforce is female?

THe explanation is Add the number of men and women to get the total number: 190. The number of women, 78, so divide 78 into 190 to get .4105. Then multiply by 100 to convert it to a percentage and you have 41%.

I want to know how they got 78 into 190 into decimal format. how do i convert 2 remainder 34. i think thats what it was well please help! thanks!

Can someone please lay it out step by step. thanks!

***Total workforce = 112 + 78 = 190

Out of 190 staff, 78 are female

78 0ut of 190 -------------> 78 /190 = 0.4105

To convert to percentage multiply by 100

0.4105 X 100% = 41.05%

or 41% are female

Your error was dividing 190 by 78 (190/78). It is the other way round

78 / 190.

I hope that clarifies matters.

Someone gave me that answer but my question is how did you get 78 /190 = 0.4105 that answer into decimal format?? 78/190 I only know how to do it so i get remainder.

When you divide numbers that do not divide completely into a whole number, then you have three options. The first is to leave the remaining numbers as the remainder to the problem, like the way you have been doing them. The second is to leave the remainder as a fraction, and put the remainder over the dividend. The third option is to use decimals.

To use decimals, you need to follow these steps in the next example that I'm providing you with:

_______

190 |78 (I'm sorry, that's the best way that I can make a division sign on the computer.

First, see if 190 can go into the seven. It cannot, so see if it can go into seventy-eight. It cannot still.

So, put a decimal point after the seventy-eight, and right above it on the top line as well. Add a zero after the seventy-eight. You can do this, because 78 is the same as 78.0.

00.

-------

190 |78.0

Now, see if 190 can go into 780. It can - four times. So put a four on the top line, right next to the decimal point.

00.4

-------

190 |78.0

-760

-------

20

Add another zero after 780. Keep doing this until the decimal terminates (ends) or repeats (like 1/3 = 0.3333.... repeated). Then, multiply the decimal by 100. That will be your percent.

I hope that I helped you!

One way to get the decimal answer would be to just plug it on to a calculator, but it can be done by hand.

190 doesn't go into 78, so you put a zero before the decimal point, then proceed like normal long division, but think of it as

190 goes into 78,000 except the result is after a decimal.

so...

- - - + 0.41052

. . . ---------

190/78.000

. . -760

. . ------

. . . 200

. . . -190

. . . -----

. . . 100

. .. . - 0

. . . -----

. . . . 1000

. . . . -950

. . . . -----

. . . . . . 500

. . . . . -380

etc...

use a calculator! If you're using windows, go to start, programs, accessories, calculator and do a simple divide.

joy!
