Team X and Team Y have a tug of war. From their starting positions Team X pulls Team Y forward 3 meters, and Team X is then pulled forward 5 meters. Team Y then pulls Team X forward 2 meters. If the first team to be pulled forward 10 meters loses, how many more meters must Team Y pull Team X forward to win?

1) team x is at -3 metres

2) team x is at -3+5 = 2 metres

3) team x is at 2 + 2 = 4 metres

so in order to beat team x, team y has to pull 10 - 4 = 6 metres more

Right now, Team X is 4 meters from the starting point, so Team Y only needs to pull them 6 more meters to win. In order for Team X to win, they must pull Team Y 14 meters in the other direction.

X←←←←←←←0→→→→→→→Y

********( - )******** 0 ********( + )*******

-3 + 5 + 2 - 10 = -13 + 7 = -5

Hence, Team Y must pull team X 5 metres more to win.
