A box plot (also called a box and whiskers plot) is a diagram consisting of a box and whiskers which displays the median, the quartiles and the minimum and maximum values in a batch of data.

First, you must have enough data on the number of pets owned by boys and the same for girls.

Then for each set of data calculate the median and the quartiles. Also note the maximum and minimum of pets owned by boys and girls. I assume your are OK with this?

For each of boys and girls: Draw a line (in pencil). Mark the left hand edge of this line as the minimum number of pets owned. Divide the line into regular Lengths (say cm) and mark on the line the maximum number of pets owned.

Now note the value of the lower quartile and find this point on the line and draw a vertical line with the line running through the middle of it. Do the same for the upper quartile. Draw the horizontal side of the box.

Now draw a vertical line for the median. You will then have your box plot which should look something like this (except the box will have a top on it):

OK, first you have to find the median of the data for boys and then for girls. Then you have to find the upper-quartile and lower-quartile for each as well. The lower-quartile is the midpoint between the lowest piece of data and the median, the upper-quartile is the piece of data between the median and the highest piece of data. You then need to draw a scale (usually horizontal) on which you should put 'number of pets owned' 1, 2, 3, 4...etc. You must first draw a vertical line for the lowest piece of data and the highest, then the median and upper quartile and lowest quartile so it fits on the scale (see link for an example: http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/power/ch12/images/Sales2.gif

You can draw 2 box plots on the same scale, so you can compare them easily.

If girls own more pets than boys, then the overall box diagram will be further to the higher end of the scale. The box in the middle of the diagram shows where 50% of your data lies.

see wikipedia for any extra info. :-)

box in the middle, a line coming out of each side, one side for girls and one for boys and the length of the line should represent what you are trying to show.

for example if girls have 5 pets average draw a line 5cm long out of 1 side of the box and if boys have 1 pet average then do a 1cm line out of one side of the box.

get me?

it doesnt have to be exactly that scale, any will do.

and the box size in the middle is up to you.

make sure you do a scale and show which is boys and which is girls.

at the end of each line draw a small line the oposite direction to show that its the end.

It's just a way of summarising the data that you have been working with. (PS. Nobody ever uses them) lol :-)
