Yes, this is a homework problem and I know the answer but I want to LEARN how to do it and I can't figure it out.

"The volume of water used for crop irrigation is measured in acre-feet, where 1 acre-foot is the amount of water needed to cover 1 acre of land to a depth of 1 ft."
If there are 640 acres per square mile, how many cubic feet of water are in 1 acre-foot?

(the answers is 43,560 cubic feet...what was converted?)

In order to convert units, multiply by the conversions. If you treat units as algebraic entities, then they cancel out. Also, by multiplying by the conversions, you're just multiplying by one, so the value doesn't change.

1 acre-ft

= (1 acre-ft)(1 mi²/640 acre)

= (1 acre-ft)(1 mi²/640 acre)(5280 ft/mi)²

= (1 ft)(1 mi²/640)(5280 ft/mi)²

= (1 ft)(1/640)(5280 ft)²

= 43560 ft³
