Susan:
Another way to say "33 1/3 percent" is .33333 (in fact, the 3s go on forever, but that's not important to figuring out the problem).
Before we solve this problem, keep in mind that 25% is the same as .25
48% is the same as .48
61% is the same as .61 etc.
In other words, percentages can be converted to decimals by moving the decimal point 2 places to the left.
48.0 percent becomes (one to the left 4.8, and another to the left) .48.
Once you've converted a percentage to decimals, you can find a percent of the original number by multiplying that number by the decimal equivalent of the percentage.
So, for instance, if you wanted to know what 33 1/3 percent of 42 is, first convert the 33 1/3 percent to a decimal (moving the decimal point in 33.3333 two places to the left gives you .333333).
So 42 times .333333 equals 13.99986, which we round to 14.
The answer "14" tells us what is 33 1/3 percent of $42. That's only part of what we're looking for. The 14 is the savings - as in a 33 1/3 percent discount from $42 is $14 off.
If a store promises us $14 off a $42 item, obviously the sales price is $42-14 or $28.
So there's the answer - 33 1/3% of 42 is 14 (the savings) and the sales price is $28 (14 dollars less than $42).
Another example to see if you get it - if a store was having a clearance sale and advertised an additional 50% off all sales prices, then what would the final price of the above item be?
We'd take our sales price of $28 and multiply that by .50 (remember, we convert the 50% to a decimal value by moving the decimal point in 50 two places to the left).
$28 x .50 = $14.
In other words, the clearance sale would save us another $14 off the sales price of $28, meaning that the final clearance sales price is now just $14. (28 minus 14).
Good luck!
