33 ⅓% off is the same as saying the sales price is ⅓ of the original price:

42 / 3 = $14.00 = amount saved

$42.00 - 14.00 = $28.00 = amount saved

Susan:

Another way to say "33 1/3 percent" is .33333 (in fact, the 3s go on forever, but that's not important to figuring out the problem).

Before we solve this problem, keep in mind that 25% is the same as .25

48% is the same as .48

61% is the same as .61 etc.

In other words, percentages can be converted to decimals by moving the decimal point 2 places to the left.

48.0 percent becomes (one to the left 4.8, and another to the left) .48.

Once you've converted a percentage to decimals, you can find a percent of the original number by multiplying that number by the decimal equivalent of the percentage.

So, for instance, if you wanted to know what 33 1/3 percent of 42 is, first convert the 33 1/3 percent to a decimal (moving the decimal point in 33.3333 two places to the left gives you .333333).

So 42 times .333333 equals 13.99986, which we round to 14.

The answer "14" tells us what is 33 1/3 percent of $42. That's only part of what we're looking for. The 14 is the savings - as in a 33 1/3 percent discount from $42 is $14 off.

If a store promises us $14 off a $42 item, obviously the sales price is $42-14 or $28.

So there's the answer - 33 1/3% of 42 is 14 (the savings) and the sales price is $28 (14 dollars less than $42).

Another example to see if you get it - if a store was having a clearance sale and advertised an additional 50% off all sales prices, then what would the final price of the above item be?

We'd take our sales price of $28 and multiply that by .50 (remember, we convert the 50% to a decimal value by moving the decimal point in 50 two places to the left).

$28 x .50 = $14.

In other words, the clearance sale would save us another $14 off the sales price of $28, meaning that the final clearance sales price is now just $14. (28 minus 14).

Good luck!

a percentage is like dividing something into 100 equal pieces. the example you use would be like dividing $42 into 100 equal pieces and then taking 33 & 1/3 of them and subtracting that from the $42. Here is a cool and easy thing about percentages. To find the percentage of something you just multiply it by what ever percent you want. Be sure and put 2 decimal places in it. For instance, if you want to find out the answer to your question, you would multiply $42 times .333 (this would be 33 1/3 %) and the answer is $13.98. That is the amount saved. To find out the sale price, take the $13.98 off the regular price of $42 and the answer is $28.02.

Try it yourself with an easier number and then it will make sense to you. Try finding out 25% off of $1.00. See ?

33 1/3 % = 33 + 1/3 = 100/3 %

per each 100 dollars there is a discount of 100/3 dollars

so per each 1 $ there is a discount of 100/3/100 = 1/3 dollar

so for 42 dollars discount is 42*(1/3) = 14 dollars

so amount saved = $ 14

so sales price = 42 - 14 = $ 28

Percent is just a short cut way to write fractions. The "cent" part is from a Latin word that means hundred, like 100 years in a century or 100 cents in a dollar.

In a percent fraction, the denominator (bottom number) is always 100. So 50% is 50/100. Written as a decimal fraction, this is 0.5, and as a common fraction 50/100 reduces down to 1/2.

Try writing 33 1/3% as a common fraction 33 1/3 OVER 100, and see if you can turn this into a decimal fraction, into a reduced common fraction. Once you get the hang of it, its easy. Math is your friend.

susan, rememeber that percentages are expressed as part of a whole. In this case, 100% = 42. If you take 33.33 off, you have 66.66 left (33.3333+66.6666=99.9999). Therefore, you need 2/3 (66.66 %) of 42. The answer is 28, so you save 14.

Here's a trick - 10% of something is easy - just move the decimal (10% of 42= 4.2, 10% of 450.30 = 45.03, etc.). 1% is easy, too...that's moving the decimal two place. 5% is half of 10%... How is this helpful? Assuming you're like me and adding is easier than dividing or multiplying in my head....

if i need 13% of 50...I take:

10% = 5

1% = .50

1%=.50

1%=.50

so, 5+.5+.5+.5=16.5

another random example

19% of 92

10% = 9.2

10% = 9.2

1%=.92

9.2+9.2-.92=17.48

and so on.

Okay if an item is $42.00 and it is on sale for 33.333 (repeating decimal)% then you calculate like follows:

42.00 x 0.33333.. = 13.9986

-This tells you that 33.3333... percent of 42 dollars is 13.9986, which is how much you save (33.33333...%).

So now take 42 - 13.9986 = $28.00 (which is the price of the item)

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Mary

$42.00 /3= $14 amount saved

sale price = 42 - 14= $28.00

33 1/3% = 33.333%

to find money saved, 33.333% off is like multiplying 0.33333 (or 1/3) by the original price

thus, 0.33333*42 = 14 >>>> you save $14

final sale price = 42-14 >>>> you pay $28

use this formula

x over amount given = % over 100

so x over 42 = 33 1/3 over 100

solve for x

Turn your percentage into a decimal by dividing it by 100.

So 33.33% = 0.33

Now remember that "multiply" means "of"

So 0.33 of $42 means 0.33 x $42 = $13.86

Amount saved was 33.33% of $42 which you've found to be $13.86.

$42 -$13.86 = what you pay after the money off

So the sales price is $42 - $13.86 = $28.14

you would take your $42.00 and multiply it by 33 1/3% discount. so 42 * 0.333 = 13.97...so 13.97 is your amount saved. then you subtract 13.97 from 42.00 to get your new sale price....28.03 is your new price before taxes....
