Answer this question using FRACTIONS.
its said i can't use decimals to work out my answer.

can anyone show me the break downs on how to work this out

First step

is to rewrite each fraction as Numerator and denominator :

2 1/3 = 7 / 3 ( we first multiply 2 by the denominator 3 and that is 6 then we add the numerator and that will 7 now we put this number as the new numerator while we leave the denominator as is)

1 1/2 = 3 / 2 ( same as above)

our fractions now became 7 / 3 - 3 / 2 =

Second step

We look at the two denominator if they are equal that's ok if not then we must unify them

Now if look to the denominators we can that is 6 is the least common multiplier so we must multiply the first fraction (both num. and deno.) with 2 to get 6 in denominator and multiply the second fraction with 3 to get 6 in deno:

(7x2)/(3x2) - (3x3)/(2x3)

= 14 / 6 - 9 / 6

Once we unify the denominators the answer will be as follow:

14/6 - 9/6 = (14-9) / 6 = 5/6 That is all

it's easy, isn't it? Good luck

First convert the mixed numbers into fractions

2 1/3 is 2(3/3) + 1/3 = 6/3 + 1/3 = 7/3

1 1/2 = 2/2 + 1/2 = 3/2 so now you have

7/3 - 3/2

But you can't proceed any further yet because the fractions don't have the same

denominator. You need to find the least common multiple of 2 and 3, which is 6

be 6. So you need to convert both fractions into 6ths.

7/3 = 7/3 (2/2) = 14/6

3/2 = 3/2(3/3) = 9/6

and now you have

14/6 - 9/6 = (14-9)/5 = 5/6

5/6 can't be reduced any further because 5 and 6 have no common factors so you are done.

So basically you need to multiply 2 with the denominator and the product with the numerator like this >>> 2 1/3 = [2(3) +1] / 3 = 7/3

Answer:

2 1/3 - 1 1/2

= (6+1)/3 - (2+1)/2

=7/3 - 3/2

=7(2)/3(2) - 3(3)/2(3)

=14/6 - 9/6

= 5/6

Hope that helps :)

dear friend fractional addition as well as subtraction are done with the following steps

1.first of all find the L.C.M of denominators of the fractions. which is 6 in your question

2.then divide the obtained L.C.M with the denominator of the first fraction and then multiply it with its numerator i.e. 6/3 = 2 in your case so multiplying it with 21 we get 42.

3.again repeat the same procedure with the next fraction but keep the operational sign between them..... i.e 6/2 =3*11 =33

therefore the result is equal to (42 - 33)/6 =9/6

2 1⁄3 - 1 1⁄2

= 7/3 - 3/2

= 14/6 - 9/6

= (14 - 9)/6

= 5/6 Ans.
