This will probably fail on complex mathematical expressions. This is because when PDFs are compiled from LaTeX sources, the semantics of the mathematical expressions are destroyed. So whereas the LaTeX source might contain \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}, the PDF will contain instructions for drawing the square root sign and a horizontal bar, and for placing the 2s appropriately --- in other words the PDF contains no mathematical information, so it would be impossibly difficult to reconstruct the formulae in Microsoft Word Equation Editor format.
