Let pucks = p, and sticks = s.

5p+3s=23

5p+s=20

------------------

2s = 3

s = 3/2

p = 3.7

1 Puck equals 3.70$.

Let x = 1 hockey stick and y = 1 hockey puck. Now create 2 equations that represent the above information.

5y + 3x = 23

5y + 1x = 20

Simply taking these two equations away from one another gives:

5y + 3x - 5y - 1x = 23 - 20

2x = 3

x = 3/2 = 1.5

So you now know that 1 hockey stick costs $1.50. Substituting this value into either of our equations will allow us to determine the cost of one hockey puck.

5y + 3x = 23 ..where x = 1.5

5y + 3*1.5 = 23

5y = 23 - 4.5

5y = 18.5

y = 18.5/5 = 3.7 ...So one hockey puck costs $3.70

Let x = 1 puck and y = 1 stick:

5x + 3y = 23

5x + 1y = 20

Subtract:

0 + 2y = 3

y = 1.50

Substitue:

5x + 1.50 = 20

5x = 18.50

x = 3.70

One puck = 3.70

Proof: 18.50 + 4.50 = 23.00

5P + 3S = 23.......5P + 1S = 20

5P + 3S MINUS (5P + 1S) = 5P - 5P + 3S - 1S = 2S = 23 - 20 = 3

2S = 3 ......S = 3/2 = 1.5 dollars per stick

5P + 1S = 20 ( Since S = 1.5) 20 - 1.5 = 18.5.....18.5 / 5P = $ 3.70 per puck
