1)The perimeter of a rectangle garden is 40ft. The width is 2ft. more than one half the length. Find the length and width.

2)In the parking lot at a truck stop there were 6 more cars than 18- wheel trucks. There were 184 wheels in the parking lot. Hoe many cars and trucks were there?

P.S you dont need to answer both.
you can just answer one if you know

Q1:

Length (x):

2(1/2x + 2 + x) = 40

2(3/2x + 2) = 40

3x + 4 = 40

3x = 36

x = 12

Width:

= 1/2(12) + 2

= 6 + 2

= 8

Answer: length, 12 ft; width, 8

Proof (perimeter is 40 ft):

= 2(12 ft) + 2(8 ft)

= 24 ft + 16 ft

= 40 ft

Q2:

No. of trucks:

18x + 4(x + 6) = 184

18x + 4x + 24 = 184

22x = 160

x = 80/11 or 7 3/11

No. of cars:

= 7 3/11 + 6

= 13 3/11

Answer: 7 3/11 trucks & 13 3/11 cars—improbable! Typo exists.

Proof (184 wheels):

= 18 wheels(7 3/11 trucks) + 4 wheels(13 3/11 cars)

= 18 wheels(80/11 trucks) + 4 wheels(146/11 cars)

= 1,440/11 wheels + 584/11 wheels

= 2,024/11 wheels or 184 wheels

1)Let the length of rectangle= 2x,=>width of rectangle = (x+2)

Perimeter = 2x + 2x + (x+2) + (x+2) = 6x + 4 = 40

=>6x = 36

=>x = 36/6 = 6

=>length = 2 x 6 = 12 ft,width = 6 + 2 = 6 ft

2)let the no. of trucks = a => no.of cars = (a + 6)

Total no. of wheels = 18 x a + (a + 6) x 4 = 184

=>22a + 24 = 184

=>a = 160/22 = 7.27 ???? some data is wrong?

First of all, question 2 has a typo. Go back and type the question correctly.

QUESTION 1:

perimeter = 40

width = x/2 + 2

lenth = x

You need the perimeter formula for a rectangle.

Here it is:

p = 2l + 2w

We now plug and chug.

40 = 2x + 2(x/2 + 2)

We now solve for x.

40 = 2x + x + 4

40 = 3x + 4

40 - 4 = 3x

36 = 3x

36/3 = x

12 = x

The length is 12 feet.

The width is given to be x/2 + 2.

We replace x with 12 and simplify.

12/2 + 2 = 6 + 2 or 8 feet.

1) You know the perimeter is 40 ft so we can setup the perimeter formula.

40ft = 2L + 2W

It says that W is 2ft more than 1/2 the length so W = 1/2L + 2

Now take that and plug it in for W.

40ft = 2L + 2(1/2L +2)

Distribute.

40ft = 2L + L + 4

Combine like terms.

40ft = 3L + 4

Subtract 4 from both sides.

36ft = 3L

Divide both sides by 3.

L = 12ft

So now we know that the length is 12 ft. Now look back at the equation we came up with for W.

W = 1/2L + 2

Plug in the value found for L

W = 1/2(12) +2

Distribute.

W = 6 +2

Combine like terms.

W = 8

The width is equal to 8ft and the length is equal to 12ft.

Perimeter of a garden...

2(2+1/2L+L)=40

L=12; The length is 12 and the width is 8

1) let the length be xft.then breadth is (x/2+2)ft

therefore perimeter should be 2(x+x/2+2)=3x+4

but it is given that the perimeter is 40ft, so 40 = 3x + 4

x=12

so length is 12ft and breadth is 12/2+2=8ft

2)I think you have typed some wrong entity, but it is quite simple.

first suppose the number of trucks to be x. then number of truckwheels will be 18x

it i given that there 6more cars than trucks. SO number of cars=x+4

number of car wheels =4x+24 and now you can equate it

hope i helped you
