x + y = 47

Let say y is the smaller number

so y+21 = x

Then it follows that, y+21+y = 47

2y = 26

y= 13

Back to original equation and substitute y

x + 13 = 47

Solve for x

x = 34

Thus the bigger number is 34, and smaller number is 13, check to see if it is correct.

SO we have two variables.

x is the larger which makes the second variable the smaller.

We can call the smaller x-21 because we know it's 21 less than x.

but we also know that x + x-21 = 47.

Using basic algebra: 2x-21=47.

Bringing 21 to the other side: 2x=68

Dividing by 2 to get x on its own: x=34.

Therefore the larger of the number is 34.

Now we simply minus 21 from 34: 34-21=13

Making the second variable 13

We can check this by: 13 + 34 = 47.

So the two numbers are 34 and 13.

two number: call them x and y. lets say x is the smaller.

x + y = 47

we know x + 21 = y.

So instead of putting y in our equation(x + y = 47) substitute in x + 21 for y

We end up with: x + x + 21 = 47. So subtract 21 from both sides we end up:

x + x + 21 - 21 = 47 -21 So: x + x = 26.

So 2x = 26. So x = 13.

Now for y we know y = x + 21 so y = 13 + 21 = 34

x = 13

y = 34

x + y = 13 + 34 = 47

OK, so first cut the number in half, or as close as possible with whole numbers.

Half is 23.5 so we will call it 23 and 24.

Now, they say one number is 21 less than the other, so lets do that. Let's move 10 (there is already a 1 pt difference) from 23 to 24. This leaves us with 13 and 34. We only move 10 because if we move 1 point over, it makes a difference in 2 points (one number gets 1 bigger and the other 1 smaller, making a 2 pt difference).

13 and 34 is your answer, good luck.

x + y =47

x = y -21

plug the second equation into the first

y -21 + y = 47

2y = 68

y = 34

x + 34 = 47

x = 13

Answer:

x =13

y = 34

x+x-21=47

2x-21=47

2x=47+21=68

2x=68.

x=34

34-21=13

13+34=47

l=larger number

s=smaller number

l+s=47

l-21=s

l+(l-21)=47

2l-21=47

2l=68

l=34

34-21=s

13=s
