Question:
What is the definition of subscript in math?

I was assigned summer homework that told me to define a couple of mathematical terms. But I'm stuck on the word subscript. I went to some websites and wikipedia but I can't find a good, short, understandable definition of subscript. Not about the upper ones or the lower ones just a general definition. If you could help me I would REAAAALLLLLY appreciate it!!! THANK YOU!!!
