1. 2/6

2. you find a common denominator so 2 and 3 are both factors of 6 do 2 times 3 so you get 3/6 plus 2/6 which is 5/6

3. one half is one part of two and on third is one part of three smaller equal parts

1) 1/3 divided by 6 = 1/3 times 6/1, which is 2, so there are 2 sixths in 1/3 (right?)

2) 1/2 + 1/3

find the common denominator of both denominators, which is 6. multiply 1/3 by 2 and 1/2 by 3. the results are:

2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6, so 1/3 + 1/2 = 5/6

3) 1/2 - 1/3

find the common denominator for the denominators, which is 6. multiply 1/2 by 3 and 1/3 by 2. the results are:

3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6, so 1/2 - 1/3 = 1/6

1.

1 / 3 = 0.3333...

no sixths in one-third

2.

1 / 2 + 1 / 3

= 1*3 / 2*3 + 1*2 / 3*2

= 3 / 6 + 2 / 6

= 3 + 2 / 6

= 5 / 6

3.

= 1 / 2 - 1 / 3

= 1*3 / 2*3 - 1*2 / 3*2

= 3 / 6 - 2 / 6

= 3 - 2 / 6

= 1 / 6

Fractions can be a mess to anyone who doesnt understand, or cant visualize them enough to solve problems. Let me see if I can help visually depict your problem so you can further understand solving fractions....

How many sixths are in one third?

First, if you can on a sheet of paper in front of you visually make a two circles or long rectangles. In the 1st, divide it up into six slices and the other, divide into 3. Now, if youre a quick learner, just by this picture alone, it should be able to solve it for you seeing that the 1st circle has 6 pieces and the 2nd has 3. But if it isnt setting in, then what you want to do at this point is color in one third of the circle that has 3 slices in it. Now think, if you have one third of the circle colored in, how will it translate to the circle that has 6 pieces? How many would need to be colored in order to make it equal? For this, just think...how many times does 3 go into 6?

Hopefully you came up with 2/6 are in 1/3

and whenever doing fractions, its ALWAYS better to try to visually represent it for better understanding, believe me I know, Im a teacher.

1) 2/6

2) 5/6

3) 1/6

Find a common denominator for two and three in all of these problems. This common denominator will be six. How many times does 2 go into six? 3 times. How many times does 3 go into six? 2 times. Your new fractions will be 3/6 and 2/6. With these fractions you can then add and subtract because they are like terms.

ok you need to learn how to use common denominators and how to divide fractions..

1. if you want to know how many 6ths are in a 3rd you need to multiply both the top and the bottom numbers by the same number to achieve a 6 on the bottom

1/3 converting it to 6ths requires we multiply it by two. 2*1 is 2 and 2*3 = 6 so the answer is 2/6ths

2. To add two dissimilar fractions together you need to make them so they have the same number on the bottom then add them.. this called the least common denominator. in this case we have 1/2 and 1/3 the lowest commond denominator in this case is 6 so we multiply 1/2 by 3 (top and bottom) and we get 3/6ths.. then we take 1/3 and to get 6 on the bottom we need to multiply top and bottom by 2 giving us 2/6ths

now we add.. 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6ths

to find the difference you set the problem up just like we did last time.. 3/6 - 2/6 - 1/6th

its all in making sure you have the same number on the bottom before we add or subtract

1. 2 since (1/6 + 1/6 = 1/3)

2. 5/6 (3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6)

3. 1/6 (3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6)

Here's a tip: visualize a Clock or your watch, you will see that:

1 = 60 min 1/2 = 30 min 1/3 = 20min 1/6 = 10 min

1. How many 10 min chuncks are in 20 min ?

2. Whats 30 min and 20 min ? answer: 50 min or 5 x 10 = 5/6

3. Whats 30 min minus 20 min ? answ.: 10min or 1/6

Maybe this helps

1. 1/6 / 1/3 = 1/2

2. 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

3. 1/2 - 1/3 = 1/6

2/6 = 1/3

1/2*3/3 +1/3*2/2 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6

3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6

1. 2/6 = 1/3

2. 6/12 = 4/12 comes to 10/12 which simplfies to 5/6

3. difference is 2/12 or 1/6

1)

1/6x = 1/3

1/2x = 1

x = 2

So 1/6 + 1/6 = 2/6 = 1/3.

2)

1 /2 + 1/3

You have to look for a common denominator, which thefore look for the Lowest common denominator.

In this case its 6 so for the first fraction multiply it by 3 top and bottom and secon by 2 top and bottom which gives you

3/6 + 2/6 = (3+2)/6 = 5/6

3) 1/2 - 1/3

Once again find the lowest common denominator, then from above we have it as 6

3/6 - 2/6 = (3-2)/6 = 1/6

Hope that helps!

HI, The answers are there, but you do not know how or where they come from. You should do a search on the computer for tables of fractions and study them real hard.If you do not get these what are you going to do in the future with math? Good Luck.
