8x=12 to find how much it is increased

x=1.5

6(1.5)=x

width equals 9"

We have an 8 x 6 picture, and we want it to be 12 inches long instead of 8.

length increases by 12/8 = 3/2.

Width will also increase by 3/2

8 x 3/2 = 12

6 x 3/2 = 9

The new dimensions will be 12" x 9"

I assume you mean the width, a proportion problem

12/8 = x/6

x = 12 * 6 / 8 = 9

If it's enlarged so the length is 12", then the length is 12".
