Is it sqrt(a+11)? or sqrt(a) + 11?
That is, is the 11 under the sqrt or not?

if by this you mean
sqrt(a + 11) = a - 1
square both sides
a + 11 = (a - 1)^2
a + 11 = (a - 1)(a - 1)
a + 11 = a^2 - a - a + 1
a + 11 = a^2 - 2a + 1
a^2 - 3a - 10 = 0
(a - 5)(a + 2) = 0
answer a = 5 or -2
when you plug in -2, think -sqrt(a + 11) to get the other side equal.

sqrt(a) = a - 12
a = (a - 12)^2
a = a^2 - 24a + 144
====> a^2 - 25a + 144 = 0
====> (a - 16)(a - 9) = 0
a = 16
