How do calculate time in decimal format - day/hour/minute ?

Question

I need to get 4 days 20 hours and 22 minutes converted into decimal format. Google tells me 4.8486 which is the correct answer. I am confused by the math because I get 4.8337. Please explain.

First determine how many minutes are in a day:



Since there are 24 hours and 1 hour consists of 60 minutes



24 * 60 = 1440 minutes in a day



How many minutes is 20 hours in a day



20 * 60 = 1200 minutes makes up 20 hours



So now we find the sum of our minutes (20 hrs + 22mins)



1200 + 22 = 1222



Now to find the in relevance to minutes in a day we take our minutes / total available minutes



1222 / 1440 = .8486111111 days



Since our decimal is reflecting days we find the sum of days, and minutes



4 days + .8486111111 days = 4.8486111111 days



Rounded to 4.8486 days

It's likely that there is a DMS button on your calculator which will do much of the work for you. It is marked with [°’”] (degree, comma, quote), and enables sexagesimal calculations to be carried out ie quantities in hours, minutes and seconds to be converted into decimal hours. Divide that by 24 and add the (integer) number of days and you're done.



To enter the time in hours, minutes, seconds, enter each separately, pressing the DMS button after each. Press the = button to transfer the result into the Answer register; the DMS button will then toggle the displayed value in hours between sexagesimal and decimal. Divide the result by 24 and add the integer number of days. That will give the time in days in decimal form. If you are working with a resolution of 1 minute, you need to keep 4 decimal places in the final value; for a precision of 1 second you need at least 5 and preferably 6 decimal places.
