Who is "the" Indian mathematician? There have been lots of them. Of course Ramamujan comes to mind first.

When you say great Indian mathematician, I automatically think of the excellent Srinivasa Ramanujan.

He is only one, but he is one of the greats and his story is fascinating. A biography called The Man Who Knew Infinity is highly recommended, by me at least

In your study of great Indian mathematicians you will certainly want to read about Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan. One of the greatest number theorists who ever lived, most of his mathematical knowledge was self-taught. Absolutely amazing in his grasp of numbers, their interrelationships and the theory which underlies them.
