Hello,

I'm writing my bachelor's thesis and I've downloaded the trial version of Mathtype because it offers a lot more possibilities when it comes to formulas. The only problem I have is that the program is supposed to automatically use italics for all variables but for me that's not the case.

How can I change that? Already googled it but had no success finding an answer.

Go to the Style menu, select Define, select Advanced, then check the italics box for Variables.

I just thought of something. If you want all variables to be italics, then follow the steps I gave above.

If you want some variables to be italic and some regular, you can still define variables to be italics. Then, when you want a variable in regular type, press Cntl-Shift-E (all three keys at the same time), which puts you into Text mode. Type the variable name. Then press Cntl-Shift-+ to get back into Math mode.

Type your formula, then save the file in GIF format.

In Word, choose Insert, Picture, and give the file name.

This is the standard form for scientific articles, it's recommended to use it. It, however, automatically changes functions like sin and cos to non-italic.

You can, anyway, go to font-options and change the default font, I guess. I don't use it anymore. I use LaTeX for my theses and articles. It's way more professional.

You can also use lyx, which is very easy to use. It's an interface for latex that makes using latex like using Word.
