In a previous question, many people answered that in order to change a fraction to a decimal simply divide the top number by the bottom number. That answer was accepted as best answer.

Very simple right? Wrong! Let's see you change a MIXED fraction to a decimal using the above math. For example: change 8 and 2/3 or 11 and 5/8 to a decimal. These fractions will require a math expert and can't be answered by simply dividing the top number by the bottom one.

8 and 2/3 = 8 + 2/3

11 and 5/8 = 11 + 5/8

You can do the conversion in 2 ways:

Put a decimal point behind the integer, and divide out the fraction to form the decimal.

8 = 8.00000

.. 0.66666.....

3)2

8.00000

+0.66666.....

-----------

8.66666.....

OR

Convert the mixed NUMBER into an improper fraction and divide the numerator by the denominator.

11 * 5/8 = (88 + 5)/8 = 93/8

.. 11.625

8)93.000

Either way will produce the same result, although the second is a bit of a waste of time.

Eight and 2/3 = 8 + (the top number divided by the bottom number) = 8 + (2/3) = 8.666...

11 and 5/8 = addition of 11 plus (5/8)....

For a mixed fraction, change back to a whole number plus a fraction less than one. You still have to divide out the portion that is less than one to find the part of the number after the decimal point.

Multiply the whole number by the by the bottom number of the fraction to give you a second fraction with a common denominator. Add the two fractions together and divide by the bottom number.

8 and 2/3 = (8*3)/3 + 2/3 = 24/3 + 2/3 = 26/3

26/3 = 8.666666

It isn't hard. First you make it a normal fraction by multiplying the whole number by the bottom of the fraction (denominator) and adding the top of the fraction to the result. The divide normally.

ie. 8 2/3 = (8*3)+ 2 = 26/3 = 8.667

or you can divide 2/3 and add it to 8 = 8.667

Wrong! for a mixed fraction the whole number remains the same;

or 8 and 2/3 equals 8.6666666, and 11 and 5/8 equals 11.625. the top number divided by the bottom.

You multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction and then add it to the numerator. Then, divide like you would with any regular fraction. In your example:

8 and 2/3

You do, 8 X 3 + 2 = 26

Now divide 26 by 3 and there's your answer...

Hope this helps!

No, you are wrong; it is very simple. The whole number is what it is, and the decimal part of it is the fractional remainder divided as stated. In your example, the decimal equivalent of 11 5/8 is 11.625. 5 divided by 8 is 0.625, you add the 11 (11.000) to it, and voila, you have your answer.

8 2/3 is 8.666666666 (repeating number, probably rounded off to 8.67 or 8.667).
