Rules for Rounding Decimals with a "5"?

What does 23.365 round to for 2 decimal places? Is it 23.37 or 23.36?

Can someone tell me what are the rounding rules when concerning the number "5" at the end ... from what i recall form school..correct me if i am wrong:

10.115 rounded to 2 dec = 10.12
10.145 rounded to 2 dec = 10.14

Is that right?

You're right. 5 is *not* always rounded up. The reason for this shows up when you deal with a large group of numbers. Let's say you need to sum a bunch of measurements together, and for some reason you needed to round them first. If you always rounded the 5s up, you'd end up with a bias in the data that would affect your sum. 1234 is rounded down and 6789 is rounded up. If 5s are always rounded up too, more than half of the values will be rounded up, introducing a bias.



This only applies when rounding 0.5000..., not when rounding other values starting with 5. 0.51 gets rounded up, but 0.5 gets rounded to the nearest even value. 1.5 goes to 2, but 0.5 goes to 0.

if you start from 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

where the no. is 5 i think you should round up

a "5" is always rounded up.

so 23.365 rounds to 23.37.

i think of getting rid of the 5 n adding 1 to furthest right number.



10.115 rounds to 10.12 is right.



but 10.145 rounds to 10.15

get rid of the last 5 n add 1 to the 4 gives u 10.15

23.37 is correct...to decide, look only at the digit you are rounding to and the one that follows it...If the digit that follows is 5 or higher, round up...if the digit is less than 5, leave the same...



your other examples: the first one is correct

the second should be 10.145=10.15 (5 rounds the previous digit up)

NO it should be 10.15

if you round it to 1 decimal, it would be 10.2

5 is rounded up. The reasoning is that there may be a little bit extra in the next (unshown) place of decimals.

Always up.



The reason is that 5 isn't in the middle. There are 10 numbers:



{0,1,2,3,4}, {5,6,7,8,9}



So 5 always rounds up.
