if you are using Windows, go to your Start Menu, find the "Run" command, and type in:

charmap

it should be located in C:\Windows\System32\charmap.exe

(or whatever your Windows directory is on your computer), if you do not have the Run command enabled on your Start Menu.

once you have the program open, check the "Advanced view" box, and you can search for special symbols by name.

In a sans serif font, such as Arial, a capital U will serve as a union symbol.

i like http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/bylanguage/mathchart.html#set

as a web resource for various math symbols.

It's not perfect, but copying & pasting from a set of the more esoteric symbols works if you're trying to do formulae in text documents. Copy & paste the necessary symbols from wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_mathematical_symbols

I can't find a keyboard sequence to generate those symbols, unfortunately.

do you mean you need to be able to do them on a computer? the union symbol is basically just U. the intersection symbol... i don't know how you can turn it upside down. sorry.

To "do" one? If you mean obtain a symbol that you can use on the computer, then you can copy and paste these:

∩ ∪ etc.

To copy them you can drag your mouse to highlight them and right click, but a faster way is to press ctrl+c while they're highlighted to copy and ctrl+v to paste.

There are hundreds of mathematical symbols in Unicode. See http://www.unicode.org/charts/ . For the Unicode block that contains the union symbols, see http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2200.pdf .

For how to enter them under various operating systems and various applications, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_input , and http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=inputtoollinks , and http://ipa4linguists.pbworks.com/ .
