Question:
Who is a born natural genius - or the more genius of 20th century - among these two guys and why ?
2007-09-10 04:21:51 UTC
Albert Einstein or Srinivasa Ramanuja

Who is the unquestionably born genius , from young to his death Whose discovery is the basis of todays technological world.
Who discovered more - that baffle even the best of the best great minds until today ?

Well both of them are not in any way Americans by birth neither is their blood or mother tongue.

One went to US to fully get established and the other went to Britain to get full acknowledgments.

I agree they are both specially and gifted !!

just as how important are alphabets for poets to invent poem as same goes to how important is mathematics to physicist to make inventions in physics.

That is why there is no noble prize for maths unlike physics , chemistry or biology.

Arguing that Einstein is better since he won Noble prize is senseless because ramanujan dies tragically at a very young age.

And the vote goes to -: RAMANUJAN _ I am far far more educated then him but his achievements are speechless if one really knows it

Every genius is born like every person is born.

I don't know what you mean by "born natural genius".

Are there artificial genius'?

Einstein was a theoretical physicist, very different from

Ramanuja who was a mathematician - how can anyone compare them?

Why do I know the Pythagorean theorem about a right triangle c^2 = a^2 + b^2 by heart and not one of Ramanuja's theorems?

NONE of Ramanuja's theorems are taught in school, why not, if they are so great and wonderful?

I have never seen one of Ramanuja's theorems, let alone use one for something.

Where can I see these 3300 theorems?

Show me the ones you claim are being used by industry.

Einstein got a Nobel prize, did what's his name?

Einstein can't speak "straight" in age four and have trouble understandings his lessons in his elementary days. BUT when his brain maturity came, his genius "exploded" like an atom bomb and ideas comes very naturally!

That is why Einstein is more natural genius than anyone else! Anyone can be very studious and equipped with many knowledge and ideas. Natural genius is not measured by being so prolific! Natural genius is the person itself and is not gained from lots of study.

By the way, I have great respect for the genius of Ramanujan (ஸ்ரீனிவாச ராமானுஜன்) but your question is about natural genius so I have to choose Einstein.

I think you have your facts a little wrong about Einstein. He flunked out of high school too (maybe there's something in that.) It was only when he found a clerk job in the patent office that he got into science. Getting chased out of your home country because of your religion also has to be somewhat of a setback.

I agree that Ramanuja's work in mathematics is quite remarkable, but I'd have to give Albert the gong on the grounds of all-around achievement. He's most famous for his discoveries in Physics, but he was also a prominent mathematician and chemist, and laid the groundwork for a lot of other great discoveries. His work in rheology is still pretty much cutting-edge for describing non-Newtonian flows. Ramanuja's work isn't really used outside of computing, and some high-level statistics.

Of course, you just asked this question coz you want someone to agree with you. Does it make you sad that only one person does? (alright then, 2)

None of Yahoo Answers online members have the credibilities or qualifications or educational status to comment on this.

I heard a lot about of Ramanujan during my college times - that was some time ago.

The difference is , those who talk most about Einstein or fancy more about him are those who is not in the same brainwave of those highly educated derelicts. What I meant was it is those armatures , half boils and high school leavers whom always talk about Einstein and his theory not exactly knowing anything about it.

I admire Einstein a lot - especially his theory about the space time warping our ether and how mass and gravity is related with it - but he is shaped , molded and created by western formal educational system and by every other geniuses before him , like galelio and newton and so who made significant discoveries and facts first - he just made the biggest conclusion.

Ramanujan is famous among the professors , educated derelicts and those scientist - because only they can much understand his contributions.

No one invented Ramanujan - he invented himself - through a book 30 years behind his modern times at his time.

I have seen his formulas - its very powerful and sophisticated

I made my research - not bad for this unsung hero.

We could not be where we are today if great minds like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton didn't exist.

Ramanujan spawned a zoo of mathematical creatures that delight, confound and humble it's peers. They call them "beautiful," "transcendent," and marvel how he reduced very complex terrain to simple shapes. And yet he is almost uneducated totally.

Debate still lingers as to the origins of Ramanujan's edifice of unique ideas. Mathematicians eagerly acknowledge surprise states of intuition as the real break-throughs, not logical deduction. I mean it is beyond human apprehension about how someone from such a slump with almost no formal training or education can actualy tune into something so great !!

I say its ramanujan - if you want to know who is more natural intelligence and genius .

Einstein and Ramanujan had different fields of work - one was in physics and the other in mathematics. So, it is difficult to compare them. But still, I shall say that Ramanujan was a better genius than Einstein, when I analyse their horoscopes.

Also, the information that Ramanujan made 3300 discoveries before his early death is simply surprising. Again, Ramanujan had to face too many hurdles like dire poverty, etc, before he was, by chance, discovered by Prof GH-Hardy and his colleague.

Einstein also faced hurdles, such as being humiliated in schools, etc. He had to wait for 20 years to see his Theory of Relativity accepted. But, Ramanujan's difficulties were more than that of Einstein. Again, a majority of Einstein's conclusions were hypothetical as in the case of the concept of "the warping of space". But Ramanujan's formulas have immense practical application.

Oh yes - I have studied a lot about both of them - Both of them are a genius. But if you ask who is more genius, then definitely I will say Ramanujan .

I mean Einstein were thought about science and maths then physics - he went to polytechnics and universities exposed to formal professional educations. - then he used his great creativity and ingenuity of thinking power and discovered everything.

But ramanujan is a high school drop out - extremely poor man - no chances to get exposed to any tertiary knowledge - one day he found a pure maths book - he learn and self tought maths himself maths.

Then from there he created almost 3000 worked and proven functions , theories and formulas - it baffled and amazed all of the greatest of the great minds - most of it are left unproven since he died early - today many are getting noble prizes on just working out his one formula - bank , IT backbone or programming - its all his theorems

Just think like this - If Einstein lived and stayed like ramanujam - uneducated and extremely poor then could he have done it - any discoveries

Yep, Srinivasa Ramanujan could easily be one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived.unheralded ability with mathematics. his genius was an ability to "see" mathematical relationships that were proven later. You wouldn't believe the uses for some of the stuff he came up with... IIRC, some of it's even used in string theory now.

In terms of his influence on physics, I would rate Stephen Hawking equal to Einstein. In terms of mathematical ability, both are below Ramanujan or Paul Erdos.

Ramanujan is very popular I guess - being several movies taken to his credits by Hollywood itself I heard two famous American rock group created album based on his life and geniuses. I searched the net and found one so far - the song was awesome download from here :::

http://www.archive.org/details/Ramanujan

My answer goes for Ramanujan - after reading much about him and his feat he inspires me a lot - I've heard and known about the fact " FROM RAGS to RICHES " but this is from rags to gods of maths.

definitely Einstein is a genius but I am sure Ramanujan is a prodigy.

jimschem – by the way I want to know how many of Einstein theorem was at your text book from your education at school time you have studied or understood. I learned that it took 20 years before anyone can decipher and interpret his relativity theory to be understood by a layman.

Ramanujans theorems – Ramanujan died – nobody expected that even him else things would have been very different.

jimschem – just look at some of these from Ramanujans :: ( its just the tip of iceberg)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_topics_named_after_Srinivasa_Ramanujan

P/S Uncle Cletus, Ph.D - the above theorems and formulas are just tip of iceberg of Ramanujans inventions - and as you said about Einsteins relativity theory these too did not discover itself by itself

Einstein have to go to school then high school , then polytechnics , then Universities – exposed to every bit of European educational hierarchy and know-how until he was saturated enough to contribute.

Ramanujan – is almost not educated at all – he is a high school drop out – he is from the miserable poorest pathetic Indian village (just like in Ethiopia) where people die out of starvation. He had discovered one mathematical book – from there he interpolate and extrapolate all the facts out and without any knowledge of modern mathematics he start to invent and create mathematical wonders – even the highest and best mathematicians goes GA GA.

To know who is smarter there is only one way – lets virtually place Uneducated Ramanujan at Einstein place and put Einstein at Ramanujans village – no electricity, no current , unconventional thick tradition of almost no exposure to modern educational world – YOU WILL KNOW WHAT WHO WILL TURN OUT TO EVEN SURVIVE.

Ramanujan did not get his credits because he died after only exposed to about 5 years to European knowledge.

Einstein is a rock star and a celebrity. That’s all. Even Linus Pauling is more genius then him.

Einstein was not very good with his mathematics he quoted once

"Do not worry about your problems with mathematics; I assure you mine are far greater."

By Albert Einstein.

No one called Einstein equals to NEWTON – Google out how many European professors identifies Ramanujan equals only to Newton or he is the second Newton.

I am a professional – I have one degree in Engineering and one masters in applied science.

IT IS RAMANUJAN - That is a reality , anything else then it surely wont have evidence or tangible references

if u know this much why r u asking us this question. this is a place where people come ask questions for which they dont know the answers , not a place where u come to pick up discussion on some things which u feel are serious to u. come on ask something better. we can go on discussing who was better of the both till the end of eternity & still nothing wil come out of it. both are uncomparable to each other & trying to figure who was greater we are just making a mockery of these 2 geniuses . just proving that one of these 2 was greater wont make the other genius any less important.

I would have to disagree with your premises of who is better?? Bill Gates presented the world with "Window" that opened the computer to the non-geek masses. Would have to think him much faster than these other two, whom most of us don't understand anyway, or know little about..

I guess ramanuj is for all Asian and non-westerners to be proud off.

In recent survey by TIMES magazine for 100 great minds of the 20th century - IT was so unfair that it depicted all 99 of the candidates of only WESTERNERS. Ramanuj was the only non westerner in the list.
