I not terribly excel literate, but I'm trying to make up a spreadsheet to keep track of fuel usage/cost to make my budget more accurate. I've typed in prices, km reading at time of purchase, litres. etc. However, I didn't type them in order. My 1st column is the odometer reading, which will only become larger as I drive more. I vaguely remember that I can hilight the column I want to sort, but where do I find this? And how do I make all the rows sort into order, while only the odometer readings are the ones that determine it. Thanks.

You don't really want to sort the columns; it's the rows you want to sort using the information in the columns.

To do this, highlight all of the data that you want sorted including the odometer reading in (presumably) the first column. Then click on the Data menu at the top of the window and select sort. Then choose the odometer reading column (again, I presume it would be Column A) under the "Sort by" prompt. Also, make sure "Ascending" is selected. Then click OK. You're data should sort according to the recorded odometer readings.

(Make sure when you highlight the data, you highlight all of it. Don't leave any columns out, otherwise, you'll mess up the data.)

Left click the letter (at the top) of the column you would like to sort. This will select the entire column. Go to the menu bar, and select Data, then Sort..., and pick either ascending or descending.
